Which Keurig Coffee Maker Should I Buy?

Have you ever heard of Keurig? In 1998, Keurig put some of their newly designed coffee makers in business offices in places such as New York City and New England. It wasn’t until 2004 when the company decided to try to sell their machines to homes and places outside of an office building. Variations of this company’s creations can now be found in hotel rooms, offices, homes, schools, and other places of business.

Keurig coffee makers provide a way for you to enjoy a cup of your favorite flavor without having to brew an entire pot of coffee. This is great for those on-the-go or in homes where there is only one coffee drinker. Don’t waste the rest of a pot of coffee due to lack of interest. Just find a flavor (or several) you like and buy some pods. Your cup of coffee takes seconds to brew and you’ll be well on your way to your caffeine fix!

Coffee And Bonding

I remember being young and all the surrounding adults seemed to drink coffee. Wherever we would go, whatever time of day, there was always a hot pot of coffee waiting to be enjoyed. I remember loving the aroma, but after trying it once, I decided it wasn’t for me. I was only 8, but I did not enjoy black coffee. Fast forward to college. I learned there was something out there to make coffee taste better: cream and sugar. Hello? Where were those additions when I was 8? (It’s probably a good thing I didn’t enjoy coffee at 8 years old; I’d often heard coffee stunted one’s growth!) Anyway, I remember sitting in restaurants with my mom, aunt, and grandma during my college years. We would visit and drink coffee. This is when I learned that I enjoyed it. I really knew I had a small addiction to coffee when I discovered flavored creamers!

Ever Met A Teacher Who Doesn’t Enjoy Coffee?

Me either, really. Isn’t it part of the teacher stereotype? Most teachers enjoy coffee. Maybe it’s the caffeine. Perhaps it’s the sugar? Maybe it’s a placebo effect and people think that the coffee wakes them up. Whatever the reason, I knew that when I landed my first teaching job, I needed a small coffee pot in my classroom. I was thrilled to find a 4-cup coffee maker and immediately added it to my classroom. I’d make a small pot at school each morning and have coffee until lunchtime! The hallways smelled of fresh coffee. It was great! I never again had a day of teaching without coffee.

Enter – The Keurig

When the Keurig first became evident among my closest friends and family, it seemed as though many of them purchased one for their home. I, however, was skeptical. I couldn’t justify spending the money on the machine AND the coffee pods. While I did enjoy the options and various flavors, I couldn’t bring myself to purchase one. Being the frugal one I am, I would talk myself out of it every time it would present itself. That is until one day, I overheard an infomercial on the television. It was a Keurig advertisement promising a great deal, warranty, and several flavors of coffee pods. I did a quick bit of research and days later, it arrived at our door!

My Keurig

This is the model of the Keurig I purchased years ago. It’s still on our counter being used several times a day. The mister and I enjoy a hot cup of coffee relatively often. We have found that we enjoy the flavored coffee pods and are regularly trying out new kinds, and my addiction to flavored creamer is still prevalent today. I do have a 12-cup coffee maker that’s collecting dust. I break it out when we have a house full of company and who enjoys coffee. The Keurig has done its job and well. It’s low-maintenance and it even shuts itself off after so many minutes of inactivity.

One Of My Coffee-Loving Friends

just purchased a Keurig. How she never had a Keurig until last week, I’ll never know. She loves coffee; her husband does not. She’s also a teacher and would brew an entire pot of coffee in the morning and take with her what she could fit in her travel mug. That left most of her brewed coffee as waste. She sometimes said she would drink it as a cold brew when she got home from school. Often times, though, it would get dumped out.

Road Trip – Keurig Mission

This friend and I took a road trip to one of our nearest bigger cities. When you live in a small mountain town, it takes a while to get into actual civilization. We drove 2.5 hours in search of a Keurig for her. When we arrived at the store, we saw several options. Immediately, I located my machine. We were reading about the product, and noticed that right next to it was another one that looked similar. The only difference was that unlike my Keurig, which has 3 options for the size of the brewed cup, this newer version had 4 options for brew size.

Her Keurig

For a little higher price, my friend settled on the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker, Single-Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, With Strength Control and Hot Water On Demand, Matte Black. The one main difference is that she can brew a larger cup of coffee than I can with mine. My Keurig will brew 6, 8, or 10 oz. My friend has options of 6, 8, 10, or 12 oz.

What The Reviews Say

While I’m completely happy with my Keurig, I’ve found some reviews that don’t show the same customer satisfaction. My Keurig, the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker, Single-Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, 6 to 10 oz. Brew Sizes, Black, only averages 3.9 out of 5 stars from more than 8,500 Amazon customers. This coffee maker is the #1 best-seller among single-serve brewers, but here are some comments I found on the Keurig I own:

Final Thoughts

While most people purchase a coffee maker to make coffee, I’ve learned that coffee pods have come a long way. In fact, with these single-brew machines, one can purchase different kinds of drinks to make via the pods. I’ve found and purchased cappuccino pods, cider pods, hot cocoa pods, and flavored coffee. The options are endless, which is one of the reasons I love the versatility of the Keurig. Also, if you don’t like black appliances, you’re able to select from various colors that Keurig offers. Certainly, you can find something that suits your tastes. Keurig offers several coffee machines. If the two above don’t strike your fancy, maybe a different product will. Best of luck in your coffee-maker journey!

If you’ve got a Keurig at home, leave a comment and share what you like or dislike about it. If you’re on the fence about purchasing one, I’d recommend taking the leap. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, especially if you’re just wanting to make one cup instead of wasting the remnants of a whole pot of Joe.

I wish I could taste a cup of coffee made with the Keurig. My family doesn’t drink a lot of coffee. They drink herbal teas. I don’t mind herbal teas but there are times when I wish I could have a tasty cup of coffee. What I love about what you have described is that it can make coffee for just one cup. I note that in the comments someone found that it tased ‘processed’. Well maybe after tasting I would buy. I really could enjoy a cup more often and especially with flavourings and options. Thank you for this information.

Hi, JJ!  Thanks for stopping by.  I have a love-hate relationship with tea.  🙂  I’m glad there are people out there who like it!  Definitely, the benefit of a Keurig is to be able to make only one cup when that’s all you want!  I have had the same Keurig for over 3 years and have never tasted anything odd.  It sounds like you need to try a cup and see for yourself!  Thanks again for commenting!  Blessings!

I am a big tea lover but I love to pop some coffee here and there once in a while only from the coffee shop so making money isn’t a bad at all. It’d be a very good idea if i can get this  keurig. The coffee maker with the better review is your friends but it’s a bit pricier. I think I’d go for yours since you don’t have a problem with it and you also say it’s been used for some years now. That means this is beauty is durable. Time for some coffee!

Okay this two Keurig coffee makers you have talked about here is really good. I feel the urge to buy both but I don’t need two do I? So I’m thinking of changing my coffee maker. This looks like a very good way for me to get something new. Yours as you say is long lasting even with a lot of work load. I’d get yours. Thanks for the detailed information.

I am a coffee lower and I started taking coffee from college. I loved coffee from when I noticed my favorite teacher takes it always and I wanted to know how sweet it is and what interests him in coffee ….I liked it  and since then I became the only coffee lover in my house. I lost interest after some while due to my excess sugar intake and I think I a missing on it and that is why I’m here sourcing for the best coffee maker i can get for myself. Thanks for this great article.

Hi, Willy!  Speaking of sugar… Do you know what I used to do?  (I’m ashamed to admit this…) My favorite way to drink coffee USED to be with one packet of hot cocoa mix, a bit of sugared creamer, and what seemed like a splash of coffee!  Of course, it was sweet and tasted more like cappucino, but it was delish!  I’ve since realized that was pure craziness, and have eliminated the cocoa mix!  Now, I’m content with a little splash of creamer added to the coffee!  I still can’t drink it black; I probably never will.  But I do enjoy coffee!  Good luck in your search!  You won’t go wrong with a Keurig!  Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day!  🙂

Thanks for providing information on which Keurig to buy. I’m not a big coffee drinker, but my daughter loves the stuff. We have owned a Keurig in the past but confess that we really had no idea which one to buy. I think we just went with the cheapest one. We are now considering a new Keurig since as you mentioned, there are so many other things you can brew with them. I have even seen cold medicine pods for those horrible winter colds. Maybe you can test out one of these on your site and give us a review since winter is just around the corner. Thanks

What a brilliant idea!  I’ve never heard of brewing cold medicine!  I think I’m going to have to take you up on this idea and try it out!  Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!  P.S. Good luck in finding a Keurig that is perfect for your family!  You’ll love it, I’m sure!  🙂  Have a great day!  Blessings!
